Terrific piece, thank you Sean. I did not have very much exposure to the Great Books in college. I came to them on my own over time. I am enjoying your lectures very much. I came to Athenaeum when we did Odyssey and Aeneid. I had already read them but I took in some new concepts, hospitality for one. Crime and Punishment was new to me and I’m enjoying the discussions. I came to Substack for ideas and conversations that cause me to think about differently and that defines Athenaeum for me. I’m in the right place

Thanks Edward! Glad your enjoying the lectures and discussions. It’s such a joy getting to discuss these books, and I’m glad to have you as part of the community. Can’t wait to finish Crime and Punishment next week!

Our son graduated from St Johns College, Annapolis, and he studied the great books. He loved the exposure, learned Greek and did well. I’m going to love this. Thank you!

Great thought!! I think It’s also the questions and discussions that arise in a community that ignites wisdom

You are speaking my language!!! The Great Books!!! Yes!!! If I knew how to leave a picture on here I would show you my set. My father read these with me beginning in 3rd grade. I loved them and continue to pore over them. We have lost much as a society by not being familiar with them.
