“So man is ashamed of one’s genitals because they’re a part of the body that is solely moved by lust, rather than reason. “
This is really good. I’ve never given much thought as to why we feel such a desire to cover ourselves. I recognize not wanting to lead others toward lust, but it’s never satisfied an explanation of that natural “shame” we feel when we are exposed.
The reasoning you break out actually makes a ton of sense. It’s kind of a taboo topic we don’t explore much. I’m glad you wrote on it! Very helpful.
I agree - it's strange but profound. I never would've thought someone could overlay a Platonic framing of philosophy on "shame of the naked body," but I guess that's what makes Augustine different, haha!
This is an interesting take on being in the nude. I think society would benefit from allowing and accepting the human anatomy in its natural state. Like if men and women were just allowed to be naked more I think things would ultimately become better and it would also root out those who don’t have the correct mindset for that type of society. It would make us more stoic in a sense and more accepting of the different bodies, skin tones, etc. no, I’m not saying people should just walk around naked all the time but I do think body appreciation should become a bigger thing and it is becoming a bigger thing. So reading this was enlightening. Thanks for sharing.
